Metro
Subway โ New York's MTA subway is the fastest way to get around. Major lines serve Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and parts of Staten Island. A single ride costs $2.90. MetroCard or contactless (OMNY) accepted.
Bus
The MTA bus network covers all five boroughs with over 300 routes. Stops are marked with blue signs. Same fare as subway ($2.90). Express buses connect more distant areas at a higher fare.
Taxi
The iconic yellow cabs are everywhere in Manhattan. Starting fare is $3.00 plus $0.70 per 1/5 mile. To/from JFK there's a flat rate of $70 (plus tolls and tip). Credit cards accepted.
On foot
Manhattan is surprisingly walkable. From Times Square to Central Park is about 10 minutes. From Brooklyn Bridge to the Financial District is just 5 minutes. Walking is often the best way to discover neighborhoods.
From the airport
JFK (John F. Kennedy) โ AirTrain to Jamaica Station ($8.25), then subway or LIRR to Manhattan. Flat taxi fare: $70. Duration: 60-90 minutes.
LaGuardia (LGA) โ Q70 bus to subway (free with MetroCard), or taxi ($30-50). Duration: 40-60 minutes.
Newark (EWR) โ AirTrain to Newark Penn Station, then NJ Transit to Penn Station Manhattan ($15.25 total). Duration: 45-70 minutes.
From the station
Penn Station โ Main hub for Amtrak, NJ Transit, and LIRR. Located in Midtown (34th Street), connected to subway lines 1/2/3 and A/C/E.
Grand Central Terminal โ Terminal for Metro-North Railroad and subway lines 4/5/6/7/S. Architectural masterpiece in Midtown East.
Tip
Get an unlimited 7-day MetroCard ($34) if you plan to use public transit frequently. Alternatively, the OMNY contactless system automatically caps your fare after 12 weekly rides.
